Brief introduction and overview of the world of new materials and bioplastics

Bioplastics are a special category of plastics that are either fully or partially derived from renewable biological sources. The aim is to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and minimise the environmental impact of plastics.
Bioplastics can be categorised into three areas:
1) Partially or fully bio-based, non-biodegradable plastics
2) Partially or fully bio-based, biodegradable plastics
3) Petro-based, biodegradable plastics

Bioplastics are being developed as innovative raw materials in order to meet society's new demands on products (comfort, safety, durability, good price-performance ratio and sustainability). With their properties, bioplastics are already equivalent to conventional plastics in many respects, but offer the decisive advantage of sustainability.

The development of bioplastics has taken place over generations and we have now reached the 4th generation. From the beginnings of the first generation, which was based exclusively on edible biomass, through the second generation, which utilised organic waste materials such as lignin from wood, to the third generation, which was based on soil-independent non-food cultures such as fungi, the fourth generation marks the breakthrough through the use and further development of innovative technologies.
